How long does freefall last and what is the speed during the jump?
Freefall is the most intense part of a tandem skydive and the moment most participants eagerly anticipate. The duration of freefall depends on the altitude of the jump – usually between 3,000 and 4,000 meters. From 3,000 meters, freefall lasts about 30 seconds; from 4,000 meters, around 50 to 60 seconds; and for special jumps from 6,000 meters, it lasts about 80 to 90 seconds, offering an even more thrilling experience.
During freefall, you reach speeds of around 200 km/h, which equals about 50 meters per second. Although these numbers sound very high, the sensation of falling is hardly noticeable, as the air creates strong resistance that gives the impression of floating. This combination of speed and the sensation of floating is what makes freefall so unique and exciting.
Once the parachute opens, the speed immediately decreases and the feeling becomes calmer. A few minutes of gliding towards the ground follow, during which the adrenaline eases, allowing you to enjoy the views and prepare for landing. Freefall is therefore the highlight of the entire experience and the main reason why many people choose a tandem skydive.
